“In many ways, Land combines bits and pieces of many of Winchester’s previous books into a satisfying, globe-trotting whole. . . . Winchester is, once again, a consummate guide.”—Boston GlobeThe author of The Professor and the Madman, The Map That Changed the World, and The Perfectionists explores the notion of property—bought, earned, or received; in Europe, Africa, North America, or the South Pacific—through human history, how it has shaped us and what it will mean for our future.Land—whether meadow or mountainside, desert or peat bog, parkland or pasture, suburb or city—is central to our existence. It quite literally underlies and underpins everything. Employing the keen intellect, insatiable curiosity, and narrative verve that are the foundations of his previous bestselling works, Simon Winchester examines what we human beings are doing—and have done—with the billions of acres that together make up the solid surface of our planet.Land: How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World examines in depth how we acquire land, how we steward it, how and why we fight over it, and finally, how we can, and on occasion do, come to share it. Ultimately, Winchester confronts the essential question: who actually owns the world’s land—and why does it matter?

This book is primarily about land ownership in different places and different times, not land itself. There is so much research that went into this book and it is so well written, that many might overlook the overriding philosophy of the author. However it is difficult to ignore the themes being advanced, that land ownership is bad and land should be shared, or, alternatively, land ownership should be limited to a very small plot like Thomas Jefferson wanted, and ownership of a lot of land either as the cause or result of wealth is bad, and apparently cities aren't a good idea, either. Further, the consequences of this idealism are not discussed. Should we all go back to being hunter-gatherers with an average life span of 29, or should we all be farmers on small parcels, living at best to about 50? Should agricultural advances and efficiencies be eliminated in favor of an insufficient food supply? Should most of the seven billion people on the planet starve, or simply go to Mars? The author doesn't write about any consequences of widespread adoption of his ideal arrangements. Meanwhile, the advantages of ownership in a capitalistic society are ignored, even though under legislation promoting home ownership such as the GI Bill, millions of otherwise poor people advance to the middle class. Effectively pitting capitalists against environmentalists against religious ideals against socialists and/or what many consider primitive societies without suggesting a realistic resolution of the concerns the author discusses is irritating.
