One thing I think about when I get a new book is how good it is for the gym. For me, the best books make the world around you disappear for just a while, and those are the absolute best ones to read at the gym.And damn, I burned 3 hours of cardio and 2400 calories with Lyric & her heartbeats, but I swear it only felt like five minutes.For real, Lyric & the Heartbeats did the number one thing I needed it to. It took the world Moon first wrote and the struggles of those in it to beat their biological fate, accept it, and learn to revel in it and did it wonderful justice in a way that still felt original and real to the characters Kole created for us.If you're a fan of the Sweetverse, you've already seen the story of an omega through Baby's romance with the Howlers, but Lyric's story takes omegas in a whole different direction. She's just as likable and excitable as Baby, and she's got her own sort of fierceness for her music and for being more than just the spoiled omega her mother wanted her to be. Even though she shows the traits that have been built into the Sweetverse's canon, it's really in the most endearing ways like feeling truly spoiled because she has her desired flavor of gummy bears. I really didn't find anything that I disliked about her.Lyric's men are just as delicious as Baby's and Lola's, and there's something for everyone. I'm honestly not sure that I have a favorite right now, but there's a lot to choose from. Em is a bit of a redemption story, the alpha who doesn't start off with the best first impression, but on the inside, he's sweet and gooey and ready to spoil Lyric if only she'll let him. Adra (Odd) is soulful and soft-spoken and just waiting for a place to belong, a pack to want him (I mean, I'll totally take him). Nohen's a little quirky, hipster-candy, and he's just a fun smart*ss beta who helps to tone down all the alpha energy. Alpha #3, Henry, is A-type, something I can totally relate to and appreciate) he's that take charge caregiver who also happens to have some ink that I totally want to see an inspo pic for. Last but not least, Javi. Ugh, a man who cooks, just take me now. He's family-oriented, and kind, and thoughtful, and everything that will just give you a cavity because it's sugar and you can't get enough.I must say, I was genuinely satisfied with Lyric & the Heartbeats, and I think that fans of Baby and Lola will be too. Kole has also given us some side characters to love, and I seriously want to see a Desi & Amber novel where the ladies go out on the town and find a partner to create an "official" bond between them. Really, the only reason that I didn't rate this a five is that I need a little #JusticeForJavi. I love what Kole did with him, but I can't help but feel that he got a tiny bit less focus/room to really steal his moments of spotlight since he came into the novel later than the others. I want to see some of the moments between him & Lyric that the others got to have, but maybe that'll be a lovely tempting little carrot that Kole might dangle out to us in the future. One can only hope! Me. I'm one. You will be too. Now, get out there, grab the book, and leave the world behind for a few hours. In the grand scheme of things, I have zero major complaints, and I'm a fairly picky reader, so trust me, Kole's got something great here.
