...and not some oversweet confection, but a dark chocolate cake spiked with whiskey and some other spice that tastes familiar but can't quite be named.But seriously, folks, if you've been aching for some of the spirit of Susanna Clarke or Erin Morganstern but with less commitment and a healthier sense of fun, this book is for you.Atwater's premise is clever. After a fateful confrontation with a faerie lord, Dora is left with half a soul, an affliction that leaves her incapable of feeling sharp and immediate emotions. Dora is not passionless, but everything she feels comes through water - slowly and a bit distant. The setup could leave you with a dull heroine, but not in Atwater's expert hands. Dora is clever, fearless and dynamic. Her emotions run deep and are all the more poignant for their distance.The plot turns upon a pair of mysteries. What is the true nature of Dora's "affliction", and why are children from London's workhouses suffering from a mysterious and deadly sleeping sickness? Dora wrangles with both questions alongside the fiery Lord Socier, England's official court magician. Elias Wilder is a man of uncensored passions, intemperate opinions, and dark secrets. (The latter are explored only lightly in this tale, but leave me eager to dive into Atwater's free novella on his backstory.)As this is, in form, a Regency romance, there are also meddlesome marriage-minded mothers, aunts and assorted countesses hatching plots to snatch someone a viscount. Balls, waltzes and costume malfunctions may be anticipated. Refreshingly, Atwater also delves into the less pretty side of Regency society - the deep social inequality, the fallout of war, the plight of the denizens of London's workhouses.I was left wanting just a little bit more - but as Atwater clearly intends to keep writing, I can look forward to getting it with her next book. Highly recommended.
